AM-High aerobic 10 mile run this morning. 1300 east and Dimple Dell to back home. 6:10/mile avg pace. No coffee this morning, just a lot of gator and off we went. Decided to yet again quit caffeine. Miserable so far...  Dark Horse out.

PM-Easy lunch time 10 mile on the JT trail line. Seems a bit cooler than yesterday which made for a pleasurable afternoon jaunt. The body is slowly growing accustomed to the bump in mileage the last month or so with 6 minute pace starting to feel almost easy and 7/minute downright pedestrian. Average hear rate seems to be down a bit also. And the funny thing is that psychologically a ten mile run seems short the same way 5 or six mile used to feel. So mentally I think this one of the benefits of high mileage I had not really given much thought. Dark Horse out..

Try black tea (50% the caffeine of coffee) or green tea (25% the caffeine of coffee) instead. May be easier than cold turkey. Once you get used to tea, you can then transition to no caffeine without withdraw.

I think caffeine in the long run weakens your nervous system. It becomes dependent on it. At first you are able to perform a little better. Then after a while, you cannot be your average self without caffeine, and eventually with or without caffeine you are running sub-par even though you are still fairly young. Long term solution is to nourish your nervous system and teach it to be self-sufficient.

I think Demetrio is right about sub-2:20. As little as a few months of steady focus gave you 2:29 in Ogden. Had you raced St. George in that shape, it would have been an OTQ. Long term steady focus with no slippage over several years can push it another 5 minutes or more.

Note that the only errors I've made so far with runners I knew somewhat well who did everything right have been in underestimating their potential. I cannot recall erring the other way.

Sasha - I recall reading a study about nicotine that agreed with what you are saying. Seems reasonable to apply to any stimulant.
